The DouxGooders BTS: Creativity Rooted in Culture

The DouxGooders BTS: Creativity Rooted in Culture

5 minute read

There’s a reason we do what we Doux.

It starts with you — the one finger-detangling in the mirror on a Sunday morning, building a routine that feels like yours. The one who found us in the curl aisle and never looked back. The one who’s been tagging us for years, who knows the products by name and reaches for them without thinking. You are the reason every single thing we make gets made the way it gets made.

This behind-the-scenes isn’t just a peek at a production day. It’s proof of something we want you to feel in every video, every product, every combo we’ve ever put in your hands: we see you. We know you. And you are the reason we do what we Doux.

This is our fourth time creating with Director Elton — Maya’s dear friend and creative collaborator — and every time we work together, something organic happens. Not because the work is loose. The work is deeply intentional. But there’s a freedom on set that you can’t manufacture. You can only build it by surrounding yourself with people who are fully in it, fully present, fully operating in what they were put here to do.

“I’m just here to have a good time,” Elton said. And he means it — but that ease is the result of care. The care that goes into who’s in the room, what’s being made, and why. When everyone around you is pouring their gift into the same cup, the whole thing becomes something bigger than a shoot day.

“It’s deeper than just creating a product shoot. It’s art. It’s spirituality. Everyone operating in their gifts. And making sure their gifts are given to the world. It’s only a gift when you give it.” — Elton

That’s the energy DouxGooders was made in. And that’s the energy we hope you feel every time you press play.

The mirror on set isn’t just a prop. It’s intentional. It serves a purpose.

“It’s always been a priority at The Doux for our consumer to see herself in everything that we do. Everything we create, we want it to be a mirror into our community — highlighting the various skin tones and hair textures.”

That mirror is a statement. It says: when you watch this, you should see yourself. Your curl pattern. Your complexion. Your story reflected back at you.

Because representation isn’t something we add at the end. It’s the first question in every room.

Maya has always said that everything The Doux creates is rooted in service. Not performance. Not positioning. Service. The kind that shows up before you knew you needed it, that answers a question you were still forming in your head.

“We create brand worlds that highlight our understanding of legacy, culture, community, and service.”

The DouxGooders campaign is the fullest expression of that. It started from one simple truth: you shouldn’t have to give something up to get the result you want. Not moisture for definition. Not softness for hold. Not longevity for movement. The right combo gives you all of it — and we’ve already done the work to figure out which combos those are, so you don’t have to.

Wash day isn’t a chore you’re bracing for. It’s a creative moment you get to look forward to. It’s the Sunday ritual that ends with you in the mirror going, yeah, that’s it.

Hair is limitless. And so is she.

“Hair can be carefree. Really engaging and exploratory.” That’s how Maya describes it — and that philosophy lives in every product we make. From the Press Play thermal system to Block Party’s anti-humidity defense, from the Bee Girl collection to the Classics that started it all — the line exists to expand what’s possible for her, not narrow it. We want her to dream her next style and already know how to get there. Layers upon layers of creativity, rooted in science, wrapped in culture.

“Our superpower is remaining authentic. Our superpower is us being us — and inspiring and allowing the people who use our products to be themselves.” — Maya

That’s the thread that runs through all of it. The products, the campaign, the BTS, this blog post. All of it lives inside the same belief: that when you feel seen by a brand, when a brand speaks your language and knows your life and shows up for you without asking you to shrink — you don’t just collect the product. You believe in it. It becomes part of your story.

Maya and the team have built something real. And real speaks. You felt it before you could explain it. That’s meaning. That’s connection.
