What does a hair serum actually do? Let’s get into it.

2026 Harper’s Bazaar Hair Award Winner

Let’s talk! Our Act Right Anti-Humectant Serum was named a 2026 Harper’s Bazaar Hair Award winner — one of only a handful of products to earn the title in the Super Stylers and Serums category. We’re proud. We did a little happy dance. We know how great our products are — every single one is stylist formulated, texture approved, and created to be a real solution to a real hair need.

But here’s the thing. While we were out at Premiere Orlando meeting so many of you face to face, we noticed something worth talking about: people love serums, but a lot of us aren’t totally sure what they actually do, when to reach for one, or which one we even need. A few people were even grabbing Act Right to protect their hair before and after straightening — and that’s not quite its job (hang tight, we’ll explain).

So let’s open up the conversation. Consider this your friendly, no-pressure crash course on serums: what they are, how they’re different from oils, how to use them so they actually work, and how to find the one your hair has been asking for.

So, what is a serum?

A serum is a lightweight, fast-absorbing treatment you apply to your hair to make it look and behave better — smoother, shinier, more put-together. Think of it as a thin protective layer that smooths the cuticle (the outer surface of each strand), tames frizz, adds shine, and helps shield your hair from the stuff that messes with it: humidity, friction, heat, the elements.

The magic is in the targeting. Serums aren’t built to do everything — they’re built to do a thing, and do it well. One serum might be all about humidity. Another might be all about your scalp. Another might be all about heat. Same word on the bottle, very different jobs. (More on that in a minute.)

The other beautiful thing? A little goes a long way. Serums are concentrated, so they’re not meant to soak your whole head. Used right, they leave hair polished and healthy-looking — never heavy, never greasy.

Serum vs. oil — what’s the actual difference?

This one trips everybody up, because serums and oils can feel similar in your palm. People use the words like they’re interchangeable. They’re not.

An oil nourishes

It’s a hydrator — richer, sinks in slower, built to deeply moisturize or add a final layer of gloss. Oils feed your hair.

A serum finishes

It’s a finisher and a problem-solver — lighter, absorbs fast, engineered to handle something specific (frizz, dullness, humidity, heat) while playing nice with your styling. Serums finish and protect your hair.

Easiest way to remember it: an oil nourishes, a serum finishes. Both can absolutely live in your routine. They just clock in for different shifts.

Meet Act Right (and what it’s not)

Now that we’re all on the same page — let’s talk about the award winner.

Act Right is an anti-humectant finishing serum. “Anti-humectant” sounds technical, but it’s simple: a humectant pulls moisture and humidity in, which is exactly what makes your style swell, frizz, and revert on a sticky day. Act Right does the opposite — it blocks humidity so your style stays put. On top of that, its high-gloss formula smooths the cuticle, tames frizz, and brings serious shine. It’s the cherry on top of a wash-and-go, a twist-out, a braid-out, or a polished sleek look. The very last step.

The one thing to clear up

Act Right is a finisher, not a pre-heat protectant. It’s not the thing you reach for before the flat iron to shield your hair from heat. You bring Act Right in after — to add gloss and lock the style against humidity once your hair is already done. If heat protection is what you need before you press or blow-dry, we’ve got you covered too (keep reading — that’s Doux Drops).

Knowing that one difference will change your whole serum game.

How to use a serum so it actually works

A few dos and don’ts that apply to Act Right — and honestly to most finishing serums:

DOWarm it up first. Don’t slap it straight onto your hair. Pump a small amount into your palms and rub them together for 5–6 seconds. That little bit of friction softens the formula so it spreads smooth and even instead of sitting in one greasy spot.

DON’TOver-apply. A little goes a long way — we mean it. Start with less than a pea-size for fine hair, up to about a quarter-size for thicker or longer hair. You can always add more; you can’t take it back.

DOKnow your hair. Fine hair is not off-limits — that’s a myth. You just want to go lighter so you keep your bounce. Heavier hair can handle a touch more.

DON’TPile it at your scalp. Keep finishing serums on your mid-lengths and ends. (Your scalp has its own serum — say hi to Get Honey below.)

DOLet it work double-duty on flyaways. Instead of grabbing more gel, rub a tiny bit of serum between your fingers and gently press it onto frizz and edges. Clean control, no crunch.

How often? Act Right is a finishing step, not a daily must. Use it when you style — and reach for it again to refresh and revive day 2 through day 5 hair when frizz creeps back in and your shine needs a wake-up call.

Find your serum: need + solution

Here’s the real takeaway. “Serum” on a label doesn’t tell you the whole story — your need does. Match the moment to the right drop:

Your style is fighting humidity, frizz, dullness, or reversion.

→ Act Right Anti-Humectant Serum

Your finisher. Smooths the cuticle, blocks humidity, breaks the cast, and brings the shine. Use it last on wash-and-gos, twist-outs, braid-outs, and sleek or pressed styles to keep them looking fresh longer.

You’re about to blow-dry, flat-iron, or do a Press Play silk press.

→ Doux Drops Bonding Polish Spray

This is your heat-styling step — heat protection up to 420°F, mirror-like shine, and DOUX-plex™ bonding technology that strengthens strands as you style. This is the one you reach for before the heat. (Not Act Right.) Mist it on damp hair before blow-drying, or section by section before you press.

Your scalp is itchy, dry, or thirsty between washes.

→ Get Honey Honey Hair & Scalp Serum

Our cationic (“supercharged”) honey works like a magnet to smooth the cuticle, soothe the scalp, and seal dull ends — zero burn, zero buildup. Massage a few drops directly into the scalp in sections.

Notice the pattern: Act Right and Get Honey are both serums, but one’s for your finished style and the other’s for your scalp. And Doux Drops is your heat step entirely. Three different tools, three different moments.

The bottom line

A serum isn’t one single thing, and the word on the bottle doesn’t do the explaining for you — you do, the second you know what your hair needs. Act Right earned its flowers for a reason, but it shines brightest when you use it for exactly what it’s built for: the glossy, humidity-proof final word on a style you’re already proud of.

So read your label, start small, warm it up, and let your hair tell you the rest.

Now go act right.
